Pyrotechnic Zirconium

Pyrotechnic zirconium is a highly energetic metallic fuel used for its extreme heat output and fast burning rate. Supplied as a gray metallic powder, it acts as a highly flammable and reactive reducing agent, making it ideal for reliable ignition and heat transfer in energetic systems.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: Zr

Description: A grayish metallic solid or powder that is highly reactive. Finely divided zirconium may ignite spontaneously in air or when exposed to moisture, and is sensitive to static electricity.

Key Properties: A strong reducing agent that burns with an intense, hot, white light. While bulk zirconium resists oxidation at low temperatures due to a protective oxide layer, powdered forms are extremely reactive.

Primary Uses in Pyrotechnics:

  • Igniters & Delays: Used as a fuel in igniter and delay compositions for reliable ignition transfer.
  • Flares & Tracers: Provides intense heat and bright light in military flares and tracer formulations.
  • Flash Powders: Employed in high-energy flash and initiation mixtures.
  • Rocket Propulsion: Used in solid rocket fuels and ignition systems.

Safety Note: Finely divided zirconium is highly flammable and may burn with explosive intensity. Strict control of static electricity, moisture, and ignition sources is essential during handling and storage.
