LRSAM Solid Propellant

The LRSAM (Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile), developed jointly by IAI and DRDO, utilizes high-energy solid composite propellants to provide fast, reliable thrust for interception missions. The propellant combusts to generate high-temperature gas, rapidly accelerating the missile toward incoming aerial targets such as aircraft and missiles.

Chemical Description & Characteristics:

Type: Solid composite propellant.
Composition: Mixture of solid oxidizer (Ammonium Perchlorate, NH4ClO4), binder (Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene, HTPB), and powdered metal fuel (Aluminum, Al).
Function: High-energy, stable propellant providing high specific impulse and fast response, suitable for long-range, high-speed surface-to-air missile applications.

Potential Components:

  • Oxidizer: Ammonium Perchlorate (NH4ClO4).
  • Fuel: Aluminum powder (Al).
  • Binder: Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB).

Use:

  • Primary propulsion for LRSAM missiles, enabling interception of fast-moving aerial threats.
  • Offers superior storability, instant readiness, and simpler logistics compared to liquid propellants.
  • Ensures consistent combustion and high thrust throughout the missile’s flight profile.
