Rubidium

Rubidium is a highly reactive, soft, silvery-white alkali metal with the symbol Rb and atomic number 37. It melts just above room temperature (~39.3°C) and oxidizes instantly when exposed to air. Rubidium reacts violently with water, producing hydrogen gas and rubidium hydroxide.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula / Symbol: Rb

Description: A soft, silvery-white metal belonging to the alkali metal group (Group 1). Highly reactive, it can ignite in air and reacts violently with water.

Common Uses:

  • Atomic Clocks: Used for high-precision timekeeping in GPS and telecommunications.
  • Electronics: Functions as a "getter" to remove residual gases in vacuum tubes.
  • Scientific Research: Utilized in photoelectric cells, ion engines, and laboratory experiments.
  • Specialty Glass: Rubidium carbonate improves stability and reduces electrical conductivity in certain glass.
  • Fireworks: Produces a purple color in pyrotechnics.

Rubidium is rarely used in large quantities outside of research and specialized electronics due to its high reactivity.
