Cerium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN)

Cerium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) is a strong, water-soluble, orange-red crystalline inorganic oxidizing agent with the chemical formula (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6. It is primarily used in organic synthesis, where it oxidizes alcohols to aldehydes or ketones and facilitates carbon–carbon bond formation. CAN is also widely used in the electronics industry and analytical chemistry.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6

Description:
Appearance: Orange-red, deliquescent crystalline solid.
Solubility: Soluble in water and polar organic solvents such as ethanol.

Common Uses:

  • Organic Synthesis: Versatile one-electron oxidizing agent used for alcohol oxidation, functional group transformations, and carbon–heteroatom bond formation.
  • Electronics: Key component in chromium photomask etchants for LCD and display panel production.
  • Analytical Chemistry: Used as a standard oxidant in redox titrations.

Cerium Ammonium Nitrate is also widely utilized in the pharmaceutical industry and in the manufacture of specialty materials, where it acts as an effective catalyst and oxidizing agent in organic reactions.
