Ammonium chloride

Ammonium chloride is an inorganic, white crystalline salt with the formula NH₄Cl. It is highly soluble in water, creating a slightly acidic solution, and occurs naturally as the mineral sal ammoniac. Key uses include acting as a nitrogen fertilizer, soldering flux, and in industrial, medicinal, and food applications.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: NH₄Cl

Description: A colorless, white, odorless, salty-tasting crystalline powder. It is highly soluble in water and sublimes (turns directly from solid to gas) upon heating.

Common Uses:

  • Agriculture : High-nitrogen fertilizer.
  • Industry : Flux for soldering and galvanizing metals; electrolyte in dry cell batteries.
  • Medicine: Expectorant in cough medicines.
  • Other: Food additive (flavoring agent in liquorice), tanning, and dyeing.

It is typically produced via the reaction of ammonia (NH₃) with hydrochloric acid (HCl).
