Lead Azide

Lead Azide is a highly sensitive primary explosive, usually appearing as a white to buff-colored powder. It is used primarily in military and industrial detonators to initiate secondary explosives. The compound is extremely sensitive to friction, heat, and shock, and can detonate from minor physical impact. It does not become less explosive when wet.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: Pb(N3)2 (Lead(II) azide)

Description: A white to buff-colored, odorless crystalline powder or needle-like solid. Lead azide is highly sensitive to shock, friction, and heat. It decomposes at approximately 350 °C (662 °F), is relatively insoluble in water, and is toxic.

Uses: Lead azide is widely used as a primary explosive in blasting caps and detonators, where it serves to initiate less sensitive secondary explosives.

Hazards: Extremely dangerous and capable of detonating from minor physical impacts, particularly when dry. It can form even more sensitive compounds if it reacts with certain metals such as copper. Strict handling and storage controls are required.
