1,3-Butadiene

1,3-Butadiene is a colorless, highly flammable gaseous hydrocarbon (C4H6) with a mild gasoline-like odor, mainly produced from petroleum processing. It is primarily used as a monomer essential for manufacturing synthetic rubber and plastics. It is a known human carcinogen and a significant industrial chemical.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: C4H6 (Structural formula: H2C=CH–CH=CH2)

Description: Colorless gas at room temperature with a mild, aromatic/gasoline-like odor. Highly flammable, explosive, and easily condensed into liquid under pressure. It acts as a conjugated diene.

Primary Uses:

  • Synthetic Rubber Production (approx. 75%): Used in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and polybutadiene rubber for tires, automotive hoses, seals, and shoe soles.
  • Plastics Manufacturing: Key component in acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastics for electronics, automotive parts, and household items.
  • Chemical Intermediates: Used to produce nylon, polymers, and fungicides.
