Hexamine (Hexamethylenetetramine)

Hexamine, also known as Hexamethylenetetramine, is a white, odorless crystalline powder with the chemical formula C6H12N4. It features a unique cage-like molecular structure and is produced by the reaction of formaldehyde and ammonia. Hexamine is primarily used as a hardening agent in phenolic resins, as a solid fuel tablet, and in medical treatments for urinary tract infections.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: C6H12N4

Description:
Appearance: White crystalline powder or colorless crystals.
Properties: Highly soluble in water, odorless, and sublimes at approximately 280°C.
Structure: Heterocyclic organic compound with a cage-like structure similar to adamantane.

Common Uses:

  • Industrial Resin Curing: Used as a hardening (curing) agent in the manufacture of phenolic resins, molding compounds, and brake linings.
  • Solid Fuel: Used as hexamine fuel tablets for camping stoves, emergency cooking, and military field operations.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Used as an antibacterial agent (methenamine) in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
  • Chemical Synthesis: Serves as a raw material for producing other chemicals, including energetic materials such as RDX.
  • Rubber Industry: Used as a vulcanization accelerator.

Safety Note: Hexamine is considered flammable and may cause skin and eye irritation. Appropriate handling and storage precautions are required.
