Akash Booster Grains

Akash Booster Grains are solid composite propellant grains used in the booster stage of the Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system. These grains provide the high initial thrust required for rapid launch and acceleration before the missile transitions to its sustainer phase. The booster enables the missile to quickly reach supersonic speeds and operational altitude.

Chemical Formula & Composition (General):

  • Oxidizer: Ammonium Perchlorate (NH4ClO4).
  • Fuel: Aluminum powder (Al) for high-energy combustion.
  • Binder: Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) or similar polymer binder.
  • Additives: Burning rate modifiers, stabilizers, and curing agents for controlled and stable combustion.

Description:

The booster grains are solid composite propellant structures cast into a cylindrical or specially engineered grain configuration within the booster rocket motor. These grains are designed to burn rapidly and produce a high volume of thrust, enabling quick acceleration and efficient transition to the missile’s ramjet sustainer stage.

Use:

  • Provides the initial launch thrust for the Akash Surface-to-Air Missile.
  • Accelerates the missile to supersonic speed before sustainer operation.
  • Ensures stable and reliable ignition and thrust during the boost phase.

Key Characteristics:

  • High-thrust composite propellant grains.
  • Rapid burn rate for quick acceleration.
  • Engineered grain geometry for controlled thrust and stable flight transition.
