Fuel Rich Sustainer Grains – Akash Missile

Fuel Rich Sustainer Grains for the Akash missile are specialized solid rocket propellants designed to power the missile during its mid-course flight phase. They maintain supersonic speeds after the initial booster stage, providing sustained thrust for extended range and effective target interception.

Description:

These are solid, cast, or pressed propellant grains, often manufactured in free-standing cylindrical or shaped configurations to optimize thrust for the ramjet propulsion system. The geometry is designed to control surface area and burn rate for consistent mid-course acceleration.

Chemical Composition (General):

While exact chemical formulas are proprietary, these grains generally use high-energy composite propellants with the following typical components:

  • Oxidizer: Ammonium Perchlorate (AP).
  • Fuel / Binder: Synthetic rubber binders such as Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB).
  • Metal Fuel: Aluminum (Al) or other metallic additives to produce fuel-rich exhaust gases necessary for ramjet combustion.

Use:

  • Functions as the secondary motor (sustainer) after the booster stage.
  • Maintains high-speed flight, burning for longer durations to propel the missile at Mach 2.5–3.5.
  • Essential for long-range engagements (up to 25–30 km) against aircraft and missiles.
  • Supports the supersonic ramjet performance of the Indian Akash air defense system.
