Nitromethane

Nitromethane is a colorless, oily, and highly flammable nitroalkane with the chemical formula CH3NO2. It has a distinct sweet odor and is a versatile polar solvent used in organic synthesis, industrial extraction processes, and as a specialized high‑performance fuel in racing engines and rocket applications. Nitromethane is notably sensitive to shock and heat and presents a significant fire and explosion hazard.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: CH3NO2

Description: Colorless, oily, polar, and volatile liquid.

Key Properties: Boiling point approximately 101.19°C; density about 1.1371 g/cm3; soluble in water (around 7.6% at 70°C).

Common Uses:

  • Fuel / Racing: Commonly known as “nitro,” it is used as fuel for RC models and, when blended with methanol, as a high‑performance fuel additive in drag racing engines.
  • Solvent: Used as a polar solvent in industrial cleaning operations and as a reaction medium in chemical processes.
  • Chemical Synthesis: Serves as an intermediate in the manufacture of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and explosive materials.

Hazards: Flammable and potentially explosive. Nitromethane is sensitive to shock and heat and is toxic by inhalation and ingestion. Strict safety controls are required during storage, handling, and transportation.

Nitromethane is classified as a dangerous fire and explosion risk and must be handled only under appropriate safety regulations.
