Krypton (Kr)

Krypton (Kr) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless noble gas (atomic number 36) found in trace amounts in the atmosphere. It is chemically inert but is used extensively in lighting, high-speed photography, and energy-efficient insulated windows due to its low thermal conductivity and unique spectral properties.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: Kr

Description: A noble gas with a boiling point of −153.4°C and a density of 0.003425 g/cm3. Krypton is typically extracted from liquid air through fractional distillation. Although largely unreactive, it can form a few compounds, such as krypton difluoride (KrF2).

Common Uses:

  • Lighting: Fills fluorescent lamps, incandescent bulbs, and high-speed photography flashes.
  • Lasers: Used in krypton fluoride lasers for nuclear fusion research.
  • Insulation: Used in double-pane windows for superior thermal efficiency.
  • Scientific / Medical: Used in leak detection and occasionally in medical applications.
