Hexogen (RDX / Cyclonite)

Hexogen, also known as RDX or Cyclonite, is a powerful white crystalline synthetic explosive. Chemically identified as 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine, it is widely used in military and industrial applications due to its high stability, brisance, and explosive performance exceeding that of TNT.

Key Details:

Chemical Name: 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine
(also known as 1,3,5-trinitrohexahydro-1,3,5-triazine)

Chemical Formula: C3H6N6O6

Description: A white, odorless, tasteless crystalline solid, typically used in powdered form. RDX exhibits high detonation velocity and brisance, significantly outperforming TNT.

Primary Uses:

  • Military Explosives: Used extensively in munitions and plastic explosives such as C-4.
  • Detonators & Blasting Caps: Serves as a base charge for reliable initiation systems.
  • Mining & Industrial Demolition: Utilized in controlled blasting and demolition operations.

Hexogen is commonly combined with binders or other explosives, such as in Composition A (with wax) and Composition B (with TNT), to tailor sensitivity and processing characteristics.
