Akash Sustainer Igniter

The Akash Sustainer Igniter is a specialized pyrotechnic device used to reliably initiate the solid rocket sustainer motor of the Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM). It produces a high-temperature, high-pressure gas to ignite the sustainer propellant, ensuring seamless transition from the booster phase to sustained flight.

Chemical Composition (General):

  • Fuel: Amorphous Boron (B) – highly energetic fuel for rapid ignition.
  • Oxidizers: Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) or Potassium Perchlorate (KClO4) – provide oxygen for combustion.
  • Optional Additives: Stabilizers or binders to control burn rate and enhance shelf life.

Description:

The igniter is a compact, solid pyrotechnic device often housed within a bridgewire or igniter assembly. Upon electrical initiation, it produces a hot, high-pressure flame capable of uniformly igniting the sustainer propellant grain. The composition is engineered for high reliability, rapid response, and long-term storage stability.

Use:

  • Ignites the sustainer stage of the Akash SAM after booster separation.
  • Provides consistent, high-energy output to ensure uniform combustion of the sustainer propellant.
  • Critical for maintaining supersonic acceleration and flight stability during mid-course missile operation.

Key Characteristics:

  • High thermal output for reliable ignition.
  • Stable, long shelf life suitable for strategic and operational readiness.
  • Compact design compatible with the Akash missile sustainer motor assembly.
