Boron Potassium Nitrate (BKNO3 or B/KNO3) is a stable, high-performance pyrotechnic igniter composition composed of amorphous boron as the fuel and potassium nitrate as the oxidizer. It is valued for its high burn rate, pressure independence, and ignition reliability.

Chemical Composition: Amorphous Boron (B) and Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)

Typical Ratio: Approximately 25% Boron / 75% Potassium Nitrate by weight (commonly ranging from 25–30% B and 70–75% KNO3)

Description: Typically supplied as small, hard pellets, granules, or powder. BKNO3 is a thermally stable and vacuum-stable pyrotechnic initiator that generates high pressure upon ignition.

Primary Uses:

  • Rocket Motor Igniters: Widely used to reliably ignite solid rocket propellants due to consistent performance.
  • Military & Space Applications: Employed in fuzes, squibs, gas generators, and payload expelling charges.

Safety Note: While BKNO3 is considered relatively stable, it is an oxidizer–fuel mixture and may be ignited by shock, friction, or heat under improper handling conditions.
