Xenon

Xenon is a colorless, odorless, and dense noble gas (Xe, atomic number 54) found in trace amounts in the atmosphere. It is generally chemically inert but can form compounds.

Key Details:

Chemical Formula: Xe

Description: A rare, heavy noble gas with a full valence shell (5s25p6), making it largely unreactive. It is over 4.5 times heavier than air.

Primary Uses:

  • Lighting: Used in specialized high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps for car headlights, searchlights, and cinema projectors.
  • Aerospace: Used in ion thrusters for satellite propulsion due to its high density and inert nature.
  • Medical: Utilized as a general anesthetic and in imaging studies (e.g., lung imaging using 129Xe).
  • Lasers: Employed in excimer lasers.

Xenon is obtained through the fractional distillation of liquid air.
