PBXN refers to a family of Navy-developed, high-performance polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) composed of energetic crystalline materials embedded within a synthetic polymer binder, typically 5–10% by weight. These formulations are engineered to provide enhanced stability, safety, and detonation performance for use in advanced military ordnance systems.

Chemical Formula / Composition: PBXN materials are not single chemical compounds but composite mixtures. Common examples include PBXN-3 (RDX with polymer binder), PBXN-106, and PBXN-109. These formulations typically combine energetic fillers such as RDX (C3H6N6O6) or HMX (C4H8N8O8) with binder systems including polyurethane or hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB).

Description: PBXN is a plastic-bonded explosive designed to be moldable or castable into complex shapes. The polymer binder system (binder and plasticizer) acts as a phlegmatizing agent, reducing sensitivity to shock, friction, and heat while improving mechanical strength and environmental resistance.

Uses: Primary applications include insensitive munitions (IM) for naval and military systems. PBXN formulations are used in missile warheads, naval gun projectiles, torpedoes, and specialized underwater weapons requiring high explosive performance combined with reduced vulnerability to accidental detonation.
