ASTRA Missile Solid Propellant

The ASTRA missile uses a high-energy solid composite propellant designed for beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air engagements. Developed for India's advanced air combat systems, the propellant provides high thrust, rapid acceleration, and sustained supersonic flight performance required to intercept maneuvering aerial targets at long ranges.

Chemical Formula & Composition (General):

• Oxidizer: Ammonium Perchlorate (NH₄ClO₄).
• Fuel: Aluminum powder (Al) for enhanced energy output.
• Binder: Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) or similar polymer binder.
• Additives: Curing agents and burn-rate modifiers for stable combustion.

Description:

The propellant is cast into a solid grain configuration inside the missile's rocket motor. Its geometry is carefully engineered to ensure a controlled burn rate and consistent thrust throughout the missile's flight. The formulation supports high acceleration immediately after launch and sustained propulsion for long-range aerial interception missions.
